It's been a while.
So, I'm sure that the five people who actually follow this blog noticed that I have been mysteriously quiet since I posted my review of Jennifer Egan's The Goon Squad back in June. And I want to apologize for not even making a post saying that I would be taking a break for an indefinite period of time. I guess I just thought that nobody would care. Which is stupid. Even if this blog never actually attracts any readers other than my few friends and family, I should still treat my audience with respect. You're reading my reviews for a reason after all.
I will admit that I didn't consciously decide to take a break for reviewing; it was partially because I didn't finish reading a book by the end of July, and things kind of spiraled from there. The other main contributing factor was that I had taken on a job over the summer that resulted in me having a public panic attack, so most of my energy in the following months was focused on dealing with my mental health issues. At my therapist's suggestion, I even looked into getting tested for undiagnosed autism, which I will hopefully get an answer to some time in the new year. So, if anyone's interested, I can keep you updated on that progress.
During my unplanned break, however, some of my friends told me how they were looking forward to when I'd post my next review. And I had know for a while that I didn't want to completely abandon this blog; I have a bad habit of abandoning projects and goals when they don't go 100% the way I want them to, which I really need to stop doing. I had originally planned to post this update around the end of November with the promise of one final review in December . . . then my mother took a hard fall while setting up Christmas lights and I had to focus on taking care of her. Life, huh? I'm still hoping to get that final review out, even if I don't end up posting it until January 1st (or even just before midnight tonight), so I hope you can be a little more patient with me.
Even though I didn't meet my goals for the blog this year, I feel like I learned a lot and have a better idea of how I want to proceed in the new year. And I want to thank those of you who have read my reviews so far. There may not be many of you, but I still appreciate your support. I hope we see more of each other in 2024.
